The conformation of Mesolithic deposits in Cueva de la Cocina (Eastern Iberia): Natural vs. Anthropological agents

2018

Physical properties of (1−x)Ba0.95Pb0.05TiO3+xCo2O3 (x=0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0wt%) ceramics

2015

The paper reports studies of the (1−x)Ba0.95Pb0.05TiO3 – xCo2O3 (x≤0.02) ceramics. Results of X-ray powder diffraction, dielectric, magnetic and IR measurements, as well as ab initio simulations are presented. The Co-doping induces small decrease of the (c/a) tetragonality of the perovskite lattice and leads to the gradual shift of the ferroelectric transition temperature from 398 K for x=0 down to 357 K for x=0.02. The conductivity activation energies are in the range 0.8–0.9 eV in agreement with the calculations. The high-temperature conductivity can be ascribed by the migration of oxygen vacancies introduced to compensate the charge deficiency due to Co3+ valence at the B-site of the per…

The development of work values during the transition to adulthood: A two-country study

2017

Abstract This study addresses the development of work values—the desired characteristics of one's current or future job—during young adulthood. Using two panel studies from Germany ( N  = 2506) and Finland ( N  = 1326), we investigated (a) mean-level and rank-order change and stability in work values across three biennial waves (age 20/21 to age 25/26); and (b) the influence of stable background characteristics as well as of major transitions in family and work roles on inter-individual differences and intra-individual changes in work values. Latent measurement models with three work value dimensions showed good fit in both countries: extrinsic (importance of job security and material rewar…

A Promising New Method to Estimate Drug-Polymer Solubility at Room Temperature

2016

The established methods to predict drug-polymer solubility at room temperature either rely on extrapolation over a long temperature range or are limited by the availability of a liquid analogue of the polymer. To overcome these issues, this work investigated a new methodology where the drug-polymer solubility is estimated from the solubility of the drug in a solution of the polymer at room temperature using the shake-flask method. Thus, the new polymer in solution method does not rely on temperature extrapolations and only requires the polymer and a solvent, in which the polymer is soluble, that does not affect the molecular structure of the drug and polymer relative to that in the solid st…

The relative stability of xylazine hydrochloride polymorphous forms

2009

All four known xylazine hydrochloride polymorphous forms were obtained and their relative stabilities were compared directly at three different temperatures. At higher temperatures, it is possible to determine the relative stability of all forms directly by measuring the changes in the composition of the mixtures of two polymorphous forms using powder x-ray diffraction methods. At lower temperatures, a solvent was added to the mixture and the changes in composition were determined. Polymorph transition temperatures were determined directly. To predict the transition temperature which was not found using the direct method, the polymorph melting data and determined transition temperatures wer…

Structural analyses in the study of behavior : From rodents to non-human primates

2022

Ajuts: J-BL's research was funded by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC, Discovery Grant #: 2015-06034 to J-BL). MC, SA, and GC's research was funded by a grant from the University of Palermo, Italy. The term " structure " indicates a set of components that, in relation to each other, shape an organic complex. Such a complex takes on essential connotations of functionally unitary entity resulting from the mutual relationships of its constituent elements. In a broader sense, we can use the word " structure " to define the set of relationships among the elements of an emergent system that is not determined by the mere algebraic sum of these elements, but by the…

Glutathione in Cancer Cell Death

2011

Glutathione (L-γ-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine; GSH) in cancer cells is particularly relevant in the regulation of carcinogenic mechanisms; sensitivity against cytotoxic drugs, ionizing radiations, and some cytokines; DNA synthesis; and cell proliferation and death. The intracellular thiol redox state (controlled by GSH) is one of the endogenous effectors involved in regulating the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex and, in consequence, thiol oxidation can be a causal factor in the mitochondrion-based mechanism that leads to cell death. Nevertheless GSH depletion is a common feature not only of apoptosis but also of other types of cell death. Indeed rates of GSH synthesis and…

New high-sensitivity searches for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons at the HIBEAM/NNBAR experiment at the European Spalla…

2021

Abstract The violation of baryon number, B , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron–antineutron oscillation ( n → n ̄ ) via mixing, neutron–antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state ( n → [ n ′ , n ̄ ′ ] → n ̄ ), and neutron disappearan…

Phase transitions in some n-alkanes and petroleum waxes — investigation by photoacoustic and exoelectron emission techniques

2000

Abstract The use of the photoacoustic (PA) effect and photostimulated exoelectron emission (EEE) technique in the investigation of first- and second-order phase transitions in pure n -alkanes such as n -C 22 , n -C 28 and n -C 32 and in three petroleum waxes having different carbon number distributions, have been examined. Changes in the amplitude and phase of the PA signal with temperature and the temperature dependence of the intensity of photostimulated EEE across the phase transitions have been measured. These measurements have shown that both the polymorphic phase transitions and melting of these hydrocarbons are accompanied by jumps or peaks of the PA amplitude and phase and EEE inten…
